Explore France on a Drive Vacation

Like AAA's Lisa Anciaux

With 129 cruises under my belt, you might think that’s the only way I travel, but my husband and I also do drive vacations – including our recent March 2019 road trip in France. If like me, you’re a traveler who wants to spend time experiencing a region with as little packing and unpacking as possible, here’s what I recommend:

Pick a Base Camp

We chose the quaint town of Missillac as our home base for five nights because it was an easy 5-hour, 30-minute drive from Paris, and conveniently located near the places we wanted to visit.

Missillac – A small rural town in northwest France with wonderful bakeries, restaurants, and a lot of character. It’s also the home of Châteaux Domaine de la Bretesche, the delightful 15th century castle where we stayed. This luxurious hotel is nestled in an enchanting park with an 18-hole golf course, La Cour Carrée Spa and an outdoor pool.

Plan a Simple Itinerary

Choose all the places you want to go, but don’t make it a marathon. Give yourself time to stop and smell the roses by alternating long days with shorts days, plus a relaxing day or two at your base camp. Here are a few day trips you can take from Missillac:

Le Mans
A must-see for race car enthusiasts. Known as the venue for the 24 Heures du Mans auto race, this famous racecourse is one of the longest circuits in the world. A fascinating motorsport museum is located at the entrance of the venue.

2-hour, 40-minute drive from Missillac.

Redon
Stroll along the waterfront, then step back in time on the Grand Rue – the Old City’s main cobblestone street lined with historical half-timber and half-stone houses. You can spend a full day shopping, eating and exploring this medieval center.

30-minute drive from Missillac.

Mont-Saint-Michel
Plan to spend a full day at this truly unforgettable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set in the bay where Normandy and Brittany merge, this rocky islet with an ancient abbey is one of France’s more popular tourist attractions, so it’s best to go during the off-season. You’ll do a lot of walking, but it’s worth every step. And be sure to try the world-famous puff omelet cooked over a wood fire at La Mère Poulard.
