What is an IDP (International Driving Permit)?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a booklet that contains your name, photo, and driver information translated into 10 languages, and is accepted in 150 countries. It’s the primary permit needed to drive legally abroad, except in certain South American countries where an Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP) may be required.

How much does an IDP cost?
Each online International Driving Permit costs $20 USD for the permit, a $10 digital passport-style photo fee, and applicable shipping charges.
International Driving Permits applied for in person cost $20 USD for the permit and a $30 passport-style photo fee. Please note that for all in-person applications, a new passport-style photo will be taken at the time of application. Outside photos will not be accepted.
Is AAA the only place to get an IDP?
AAA is one of two official organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs.
How do I know if I need an IDP?
If you plan on driving internationally in one of the countries on this list, you will need an IDP.
How do I purchase foreign currency with AAA Washington?
You can order your foreign currency ahead of time via our Foreign Currency portal. We recommend ordering currency before you depart to avoid hefty transaction fees. Currency exchanges can be delivered to you in as little as one business day!
