Inspiring Students Statewide to Honor’ Legacy of Courage and Unity

AAA Washington – is proud to support Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day (RBWTSD) in schools across the state, providing resources to help students honor civil rights leader Ruby Bridges. This year, AAA Washington donated 13 RBWTSD kits to local schools, empowering students to learn about and embody Ruby’s legacy through meaningful conversations and collective action.

On November 14, 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first Black student to integrate a public school in the South. Her bravery marked a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights and the pursuit of equality in education. Today, Ruby’s legacy inspires young leaders to foster unity, courage and understanding in their communities.

Inspired by Ruby’s story, AAA School Safety Patrollers in San Francisco, initiated the first RBWTSD in 2018, spearheading a nationwide movement focused on safety, inclusion and leadership. Building on this legacy, AAA Washington has proudly partnered with local schools by providing educational kits, empowering students to honor Ruby’s impact while encouraging their growth as role models and leaders in their communities.

“We believe in fostering safe and supportive learning environments, and we are honored to support students as they walk in the footsteps of Ruby Bridges,” said Erin Rogers, Community Engagement Manager for AAA Washington. “These kits empower students to have meaningful conversations, strengthen unity and recognize their role in building inclusive communities.”

This year, 13 schools across Washington are participating in RBWTSD:

  • Everett: Forest View Elementary School, Silver Lake Elementary, Jackson Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary, and Whittier Elementary
  • Spokane: Queen Anne Elementary, Bemiss Elementary, and Jefferson Elementary
  • Seattle: Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Broadview-Thomson K-8 School, and Roxhill Elementary School
  • Tacoma: Grant Center for the Expressive Arts Elementary
  • Woodinville: Laura Ingalls Wilder Elementary

Each participating school organizes a symbolic walk, whether to school, on the playground, or in the halls, encouraging students to come together, reflect on Ruby Bridges’ legacy, and discuss the values of courage, respect, equality and responsibility. Through these conversations, students will engage on leadership, civil rights and what it means to create safe, welcoming spaces for all.

Since partnering with RBWTSD in 2022, AAA Washington has supported 54 schools, working to make RBWTSD an impactful event across the state, where students learn to become changemakers, just as Ruby did.
